The CMC community gathered to honor Ryal R. Poppa '57 GP'08 and his wife, Ruth Ann GP'08, at the official dedication of the Ryal Residential Lab on Sept. 2. With more than two dozen computer workstations, printers, a gurgling fountain, and a "smart patio," the new lab will provide CMC students a relaxing place to work and access to the latest wireless technology.
In January, the Dean of the Students office agreed to release significant space in Phillips Dorm. A sub-committee of students called the Student Computing Committee worked with faculty, staff, and contractors over a period of four months to create the specifications and generate firm quotes for this transformative computing lab at Claremont McKenna College.
The repurposing of the Phillips Apartments area, located at the extreme northern end of Phillips Hall, was an ideal location on campus for this residential lab. The new lab is located at the north end of Mid Quad and is very close to North Quad. In addition, it is just outside Collins Dining Hall and Story House, placing it directly in the path of most students.
