Professor Hilary Appel appointed Director of the Keck Center for International and Strategic Studies

Hilary Appel

Hilary Appel, Podlich Family Professor of Government and George R. Roberts Fellow, has been appointed Director of the Keck Center for International and Strategic Studies.

As a teacher-scholar in the Government department, Professor Appel examines the politics behind post-Communist economic reforms, policies of retrospective justice, and the role of the EU and NATO in Eastern Europe. She has served as the Associate Director of the Keck Center, Acting Director of the Mgrublian Center for Human Rights, and Associate Dean of the Faculty. Among her distinctions at CMC: the G. David Huntoon Sr. Teaching Award, Dean of Faculty Award for Service, and the Roy P. Crocker Award for Merit.

Professor Appel succeeds Professor Minxin Pei, Tom and Margot Pritzker ’72 Professor of Government and George R. Roberts Fellow. Under Professor Pei’s leadership, the Keck Center launched the International Journalism Lab and flagship Asia Experts Forum. He also expanded its research assistant, fellowship, and internship programs; organized its speaker series and academic conferences; and initiated student-faculty dinners and faculty research seminars.

The Keck Center, which opened in 1983, support students and faculty in the study of critical issues in world affairs and advanced scholarship in international strategic studies.
