The Lark Quartet, featuring violinists Deborah Buck and Maria Bachmann, violist Kathryn Lockwood, and cellist Astrid Schween, will perform at the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum on Monday, Feb. 20 for the evening program, "The Lark Quartet Plays Bolcom, Gershwin, and Debussy." The public portion of the event begins at 6:45 p.m.; seating is free, on a first-come basis.
The award-winning musicians, returning by popular demand, last visited CMC in 2004. Considered masters of both the traditional string quartet repertoire and the works of recent artists, they are also known for bending the classical mode. The group has earned numerous international awards over the course of nearly two decades, including the Naumburg Chamber Music Award and the Gold Medal at Russia's Shostakovich Competition, and has commissioned and premiered works by leading American composers including Pulitzer Prize-winning Aaron Jay Kernis.
The quartet's discography includes nearly a dozen CD recordings and a 1998 video documentary that recently appeared on Public Television stations nationwide.
They currently hold the position of quartet in residence for the department of music and dance at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
