Keck Center-European Union ConferenceExamines Postcommunist Reform

The Keck Center for International and Strategic Studies and The European Union Center of California are sponsoring a conference, "Evaluating Success and Failure in Postcommunist Reform," Feb. 7 and 8 on the Claremont McKenna College and Pitzer College campuses. Through lecture and discussion group formats, a wide variety of topics related to the changes in formerly communist countries will be addressed, including democratization, economic reforms and privatization, fledgling political parties, and judging success in burgeoning capitalist democracies.

First-day speakers will include Stephen Hanson of the University of Washington; Steven Fish of the University of California, Berkeley; Juliet Johnson of Loyola University; Andrew Barnes of Kent State University; Pauline Jones Luong of Yale University; and, from The Claremont Colleges, Edward Haley, CMC; Nigel Boyle, Pitzer; Patricia Dillon, Scripps College; and Frank Wykoff, Pomona College.

Speakers on Feb. 8 include Hilary Appel, CMC; Rudra Sil, the University of Pennsylvania; Andrew Spicer, the University of California, Riverside; Anna Grzymala-Busse, Yale University; Ellen Commisso and Matthew Murphy, the University of California, San Diego; Milada Anna Vachudova, the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; and Matthey Murphy and Maria Tzintzarova, Claremont Graduate University.

The conference begins at CMC in the Bauer Center Founders Room, followed Feb. 8 at the Gold Student Center, Pitzer College.
