Keck Center Conference Examines Law, Diplomacy & War

The Keck Center for International and Strategic Studies will host a conference on Law, Diplomacy, and War on Friday, March 24, beginning with registration at 9 a.m. in the Founders Room at Bauer Center. At 9:30, Eric Posner, the Kirkland and Ellis Professor of Law at the University of Chicago School of Law, will discuss International Law and Foreign Relations.

Keck Center Director Chae-Jin Lee, the BankAmerica Professor of Pacific Basin Studies and Professor of Government at CMC, says the day-long conference is designed to discuss a wide range of issues concerning legal aspects of war and war crimes. "Since many of our students go on to law school, we felt this particular conference would provide them the opportunity to listen to some of the debates and discussions on this important topic," Lee says.

Additional featured discussions will include: National Security Law Perspectives, Jack Beard, UCLA School of Law; The Legal and Diplomatic Consequences of a Declaration of War, Maj. Gen. John Altenburg, U.S. Army; Human Rights and Humanitarian Intervention, Ralph Steinhardt, the George Washington University Law School; Dealing with War Crimes, Genocide, and Crimes Against Humanity, Naomi Roht-Arriaza, University of California, Hastings College of the Law; POWs, Unlawful Combatants, and All Things in Between, William Aceves, California Western School of Law; and Legal and Moral Aspects of Immigration, Ward Elliott, the Burnet C. Wohlford Professor of American Political Institutions at CMC.

Other CMC conference discussants will include Rhonda Evans-Case, visiting assistant professor of government, and Ken Miller, assistant professor of government. Eric Larson, senior policy analyst at RAND Corporation will also serve as a discussant.

The conference is free and open to the public, although reservations for lunchto be served at the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeumare required by Monday, March 20.
