With the announcement on Monday, Nov. 11, by the NCAA that the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball and women’s soccer teams have qualified for their respective NCAA Championships, four fall CMS teams in all are participating in NCAA postseason competition.
On Saturday, Nov. 9, the CMS women’s soccer team defeated Cal Lutheran on the road 1-0 in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament final to earn the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship. For the Athenas, it is their first NCAA postseason appearance since 2009. The Athenas face Hardin-Simmons (Tex.) on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m. (PST) at Cal Lutheran in its first round match.
Also earning an invite to NCAA postseason play is the Athena volleyball team which earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship. It is the volleyball team’s first NCAA postseason appearance since 1997 and fifth appearance overall. Thomas More is the Athena volleyball team’s first round opponent. The two teams face off on Friday, Nov. 15 at 9:30 a.m. (PST) at the Emory University Regional in Atlanta, Ga.
Both the CMS men’s and women’s cross country teams are also competing at the NCAA level this fall, with the NCAA Division III Cross Country West Regionals on Saturday, Nov. 16 hosted by Pomona-Pitzer. The women's race begins at 9 a.m., with the men's race taking place at 10:15 a.m.
