CMS men's tennis will host and compete in the four-team NCAA West Regional this weekendlikely to be the last competitive dual matches ever to be played at CMS' Marks and Smith courts.
The CMS men's team is the top seed in the regional and is ranked second nationally. The Stags face fourth-seeded Whitman College, ranked #20 nationally, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 3. Later that afternoon, second-seeded U.C. Santa Cruz, the defending Division III national champions, will compete against third-seeded Redlands on the other half of the draw. Santa Cruz is ranked #1 nationally, while Redlands is ranked #10.
The weekend's competition will conclude at noon on Sunday, May 4 between the winners of Saturday's matches, with the winner of Sunday's match advancing to the NCAA Team Quarterfinals in Lewiston, Maine, May 13-15.
"We're delighted to be hosting, despite the challenge of having three top-10 teams in our regional," says CMS men's tennis coach Paul Settles. "We look to send out the Marks and Smith courts in style, and playing in front of a big crowd on our courts gives us a great advantage."
CMS tennis teams will begin play for the 2009 season at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center, with the men hosting the NCAA Team and Individual Championships next May.
