For the third year in a row, Claremont McKenna College will be the host-site for Nike sports camps this summer for tennis and swimming. The Nike tennis camp, under the direction of CMS men's tennis coach Paul Settles, opens this weekend, June 11-16, with three more sessions planned for June 19-23, June 25-30, and July 3-7.
The 2006 Nike Swimming Camp, for competitive swimmers ages 9 to 18, will be held June 25-29, led by head CMS swimming coach Charles Griffiths.
CMS men's tennis coach Paul Settles, who led the Stags to a SCIAC championship and a No. 5 national ranking in Division III, says CMC's outstanding coaching staff, athletic facilities, proximity to Los Angeles, and Southern California climate make the campus an ideal location for the Nike camps. The camps, he says, are for all ability levels: beginners with a passion for a sport, players looking to prep for an upcoming season, or advanced athletes already competing at an elite level.
The tennis camp, under Settles' direction, is for juniors ages 6-17. Upon arrival, participants will be grouped with players of their own skill level (beginner-intermediate, high school, and tournament players), following a personal evaluation. Each day will include morning and afternoon tennis sessions with instructions, drills, and match play, as well as breakfast and dinner for those boarding on campus. Settles, who is coaching the camp for a third time, says the experience will emphasize the value of team competition and camaraderie, and promises superior instruction with a 5:1 camper-to-instructor ratio.
Last year's tennis camp attracted more than 100 participants, both from the local area and as far as Florida, Settles says. Participants already signed up for this year's camp include residents of Nevada, Washington, Utah and Florida.
The Nike swimming camp, scheduled June 25-29 for competitive swimmers ages 9-18, includes instructional programs and meals and housing for overnight campers. "We provide instruction on each of the competitive strokes, plus we focus on important dry-land concepts such as nutrition and goal setting during camp," Griffiths says. "We also devote substantial time to starts and turns and find that our campers often improve significantly in those areas." Sessions will alternate between focused, intensive training in the water and classroom.
Griffiths, in his fifth year at Claremont McKenna College, has made his mark upon the CMC swimming program with 47 SCIAC individual titles, 31 SCIAC records broken, 22 SCIAC meet records set and four SCIAC team titles. In March, the women's CMS swimmers finished ninth in the nation during the 2006 NCAA Division III championships.
The camps are open to both resident and non-resident campers. Resident campers are given the opportunity to stay on campus during the duration of the camp.
