Terrance J. Tumey, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Director of Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation and William B. Arce and George R. Roberts Fellow Instructor of Physical Education, will be leaving Claremont June 30 to become athletics director at Division I Fresno State University.
Claremont McKenna College President Hiram E. Chodosh informed the CMS community of Tumey’s departure Thursday.
Tumey joined CMS in 2016. CMS finished this past year with three national championships and a No. 3 ranking in the Division III Learfield Directors’ Cup.
Chodosh said CMS will immediately begin a search for its next director of athletics.
Mike Sutton ’76 will serve as acting director of athletics as CMS searches for Tumey’s replacement. A former CMS athlete, coach, and director of athletics, Sutton has for the past two years served as director of advancement for athletics at Claremont McKenna College. He is a member of the CMS Hall of Fame.
“Mike is a close friend to the scholar-leader-athletes, coaches, staff, faculty, and alumni who have moved CMS to its current level of excellence,” Chodosh said. “He looks forward to accelerating our exciting momentum.”
During Sutton’s 16 years as director of athletics (2001-2016), CMS won more than 100 SCIAC titles. In Sutton’s final year, CMS won two NCAA Division III national titles and finished No. 10 in the Division III Learfield Directors’ Cup standings.
Sutton said Tumey “enabled the department to grow tremendously, by bringing in a fresh perspective. He made it a truly 21st century enterprise, and we are on a great trajectory.”
