CMC’s Rose Parade® float is taking shape

Preview shot of Mt. Baldy sculpture at Tournament of Rose Parade barn.

Work is underway on Claremont McKenna College’s 55-foot-long Rose Parade® float that celebrates the College’s 75th anniversary and supports the Tournament of Roses® theme, “Turning the Corner.”

Welders are busily crafting the Mt. Baldy section of CMC’s float at Fiesta Parade Floats warehouse in Irwindale. Get a glimpse of the action in this video!

The float is funded entirely through special donations, and 100% of gifts received as part of the Adopt a Rose program will support student scholarships.

The float depicts several iconic elements of the Claremont McKenna campus, which will soon come to life:

  • snow-capped Mt. Baldy, with the College emerging from the San Gabriel mountains;
  • noted public art from Christopher Burden, Jeppe Hein, and Pae White (Scripps ’85);
  • iconic buildings, including Roberts Pavilion, Kravis Center, and the new Robert Day Sciences Center;
  • a creative take on Claremont McKenna’s book and globe logo, showing a commitment to world affairs; and
  • Southern California flora.

Since 1890, the Tournament of Roses has produced America’s New Year Celebration®, bringing the traditions of the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Game® to Pasadena and the world.

CMCers will have the opportunity to take part in decorating the float at Fiesta and can attend other family-friendly events to celebrate CMC and 2023. Learn more here.

Alumni, parents, and friends can contribute to scholarships for current CMC students, in honor of our participation in the 2023 Rose Parade® by adopting a rose which will “float” down Colorado Blvd. 100%—every dollar—will support student scholarships. Please see more details here.
