CMC Race for Cure Team Finishes in Top 10

Claremont McKenna College's first Race for the Cure team competing in last week's fundraising run/walk at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena finished 10th among 50 teams participating in the Feb. 26 event, benefiting the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Not only did the College's first-ever team secure a spot in the top 10, but two of the team's organizers women's soccer coach Keri Sanchez and educational technologist Kristin Miller finished first and third, overall, respectively, in the women's division of the 5k run. Both women also placed first within each of their respective age divisions.

"Not bad for being unaware that they were timing teams!" Miller said, post-race.

With 30 participants representing CMC efforts, Team Claremont McKenna College raised $1,800 in its initial effort to support breast cancer research. Miller said she was impressed by the "outstanding show of support from colleagues and friends of the College, especially in the first year of participation."

Participation in the breast cancer walk/run was organized by the Claremont McKenna Activities Committee. Prior CMAC activities included a Feb. 10 confections cooking demonstration with Athenaeum pastry chef Sid Vichaita, a lecture in November by Professor Jonathan Petropoulos on the research for his newest book, Royals and the Reich, and a wellness session with Dr. Rebecca Kornbluh, M.D., director of the Monsour Counseling Center of The Claremont Colleges.
