CMC In The News

Yahoo! Finance published a story that cites Prof. Ken Miller, director of the Rose Institute of State and Local Government, explaining how businesses in California are choosing to relocate to neighboring states.

Research published by Prof. Laura Grant on residential electricity usage during daylight savings was cited by Crain’s New York Business.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Prof. Jack Pitney assessed the chances of a Republican candidate winning the open California U.S. Senate seat. “It’s possible we could have political and demographic changes in years to come, but at least for the next couple election cycles, it’s very difficult to see how a Republican can win a Senate race in California,” he said.

Westside Today featured the Rose Institute’s “cost of doing business” study, which pronounced Culver City as the most expensive city for businesses in both Los Angeles County and several states in the Western United States.

The Daily Beast interviewed Prof. Jack Pitney about President Joe Biden’s re-election strategy focusing on economic benefits. “Tangible benefits are what people like Joe Biden do,” Pitney said. “He’s an old-fashioned lunch bucket liberal delivering real benefits to real people, and the people who benefit are not just marginalized groups. Everybody uses roads and bridges. He’s playing to strength.”

Prof. Hilary Appel was interviewed by Newsweek about Ukraine’s potential attempt to reclaim Crimea from Russia.

“President Putin's annexation of Crimea in 2014 paid huge political dividends for Putin and he will defend Russia's control of the peninsula to the end,” Appel said. “Kyiv knows how valuable Crimea is to Putin, but it also knows the Russian military is stretched very thin at the moment.”

In an opinion piece for Bloomberg, Prof. Minxin Pei analyzed Republican lawmakers’ stance on China. “The metamorphosis of the GOP from a pro-trade party into a staunch advocate for protectionism cannot help but benefit China, the top trading partner of more than 120 countries,” he wrote.

Prof. Jack Pitney was interviewed by Newsweek about whether the Republican focus on culture wars will deliver votes in mainstream America. "The sustainability of culture war issues depends on the battlefront," he said.

Research conducted by the Rose Institute for State and Local Government, in collaboration with Kosmont Companies, was featured in the Los Angeles Times. The Rose Institute’s “cost of doing business” study analyzes business migration in and out of California.

In an opinion piece published by Bloomberg, Prof. Minxin Pei wrote that China caused a diplomatic crisis with its burst balloon over the U.S. “Now it’s up to Chinese leaders to take the first step to salvage ties,” he argued.

In an opinion piece for Bloomberg, Prof. Minxin Pei wrote that, “after two years in office, President Joe Biden is in a stronger position to deal with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping… Biden should be able to lower the temperature with China without sacrificing any principles or vital U.S. interests.”

CMC government professor Hilary Appel was interviewed by Newsweek in response to German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock’s keynote address on the war in Ukraine and Russia’s role.

"Russia prefers to characterize this as a proxy war to justify its actions and to account for its poor performance on the battlefield," Appel said.

The New York Times interviewed Prof. Minxin Pei, an expert in Chinese politics, about how the Chinese Communist Party’s efforts to limit discord over its sudden “zero Covid” pivot are being challenged. “The sudden 180-degree turn from ‘zero Covid’ has precipitated a new crisis for which the government needs to explain to the people,” Pei said.

In an opinion piece published by Bloomberg, Prof. Minxin Pei detailed how Chinese President Xi Jinping has been wounded by China’s Covid surge.

“The Chinese leader is already paying a price. For now at least, the chaotic reopening has derailed his agenda for his third term,” Pei wrote.

The Economist featured a research paper co-authored by Prof. Jessamyn Schaller showing that the shift to remote schooling during the pandemic led to a decrease in teen suicides. Forbes also featured the study.
