Professors John Farrell, Gregory Hess, Charles Kesler, and Alex Rajczi will visit the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum on Tuesday, March 27 for a panel discussion, "Is War Ever Justified?" The public portion of the event, sponsored by the Claremont McKenna Student Union, begins at 6:45 p.m.; seating is on a first-come basis.
The discussion will consider how war has been an inescapable reality in societies both ancient and modern, and how those societies haveand still dostruggle to justify their decisions. Asking the question Why do we go to war? Tuesday's gathering will be an interdisciplinary discussion among several CMC scholars examining our past and present.
Professor of Literature John Farrell, a graduate of Brown University, will address how wars are justified. Farrell received his master's and doctorate degrees from Harvard University.
Gregory Hess, vice president and dean of the faculty and the Russell S. Bock Chair of Public Economics and Taxation, will present a formal political economics perspective on war. Hess is a graduate of the University of California, Davis, and received his master's and doctorate degrees from The Johns Hopkins University.
Charles Kesler, professor of government and director of the Salvatori Center for the Study of Individual Freedom in the Modern World, will present a political perspective of war. Kesler is a graduate of Harvard University, where he also received his master's and doctorate degrees.
Assistant professor of philosophy Alex Rajczi will discuss the ethical issues involved in justifying war. Rajczi is a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, where he also received his master's and doctorate degrees.
