Brookings' Strobe Talbott To Address Res Publica

Strobe Talbott, president of The Brookings Institution and deputy secretary of state during the Clinton administration, will be the featured speaker at the Thursday, March 3 Res Publica luncheon event in San Francisco.
Talbott served in the State Department from 1993 to 2000, first as ambassador-at-large and special adviser to the secretary of state for the new independent states of the former Soviet Union, then as deputy secretary of state for seven years. In July 2002 he was named Brookings Institution president.
Talbott entered the world of politics as a young journalist for Time, covering Eastern Europe, the State Department, and the White House, before moving to the ranks of Washington bureau chief, editor-at-large and foreign affairs columnist. His books include The Russia Hand: A Memoir of Presidential Diplomacy, At the Highest Levels (with Michael Beschloss), Deadly Gambits: Reagan and The Russians, Endgame, and Khrushchev Remembers: The Last Testament. Talbott earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Yale and Oxford universities and holds honorary degrees from Trinity College, Georgetown University, and the Monterey Institute. He is a trustee of the Carnegie Endowment for World Peace and faculty member of the World Economic Forum. He has also served as a fellow of the Yale Corporation, and a director of the Council on Foreign Relations and the American Association of Rhodes Scholars.
