Athenas and Stags Advance to Nationals

Eight Claremont-Mudd-Scripps swimmers have qualified for the 2007 NCAA Division III Swimming Championships in Houston, Texas, March 8-10, and 15-17.

Lisal Smith '07 qualified in the 200 IM and 400 IM and will swim the 200 breast stroke as an extra event. Lauren Kristensen '07 qualified in the 100 freestyle and will swim the 50 free as an extra event. Jordan Stewart '09 qualified in the 400 IM and will swim the 200 IM and 100 free as extra events. Danielle Peebles '09 qualified in the 1650 free and will swim the 500 free and 200 free as extra events. Kevyn Klein '08 qualified via relays and will swim the 50 free and 100 free as extra events. Monica Brazelton '10 qualified as a relay-only swimmer. All six swimmers will compete in the 200 free, 400 free, and 800 free relays, as well as the 200 medley and 400 medley relays.

In addition, diver Mark Emanuel (HMC) and Matt Gannon '09 have qualified for Nationals. Emmanuel qualified in 1-m and 3-m diving, while Gannon made it in the 400 IM and will also swim the 200 IM and 200 back.

"We're excited for the opportunity to compete at NCAA's in Houston," said CMS head swimming coach Charles Griffiths. "We have finished in the top 15 at Nationals three times in the past five years, placing a team-best ninth last year, so the Athenas are looking forward to adding to that legacy."

As of March 12, the women tied for 14th place at the NCAA championships. Honorable Mention All-American honors were won by Smith in the 200 and 400 individual medley, Peebles in the 1650 freestyle and by the 200 medley (Smith, Kristensen, Klein, Brazelton), 400 medley (Smith, Kristensen, Klein, Peebles), 200 freestyle (Brazelton, Smith, Klein, Kristensen), 400 freestyle (Brazelton, Peebles, Klein, Kristensen), and 800 freestyle (Stewart, Brazelton, Peebles, Kristensen) relays.

The women finished 9-2 overall and 7-0 in SCIAC (1st). The men finished 7-2 overall and 6-1 in SCIAC (2nd).
