Applications Sought for Luce Scholars Program

Young alumni are encouraged to apply for the Luce Asian Scholars Program, an opportunity for qualified applicants to spend a year in an Asian country. Claremont McKenna College is among the 67 selected colleges and universities invited to nominate candidates for the prestigious Luce Scholars Program, which provides annual stipends and internships to young Americans interested in living and working in Asia for a year.

Application materials must be submitted to the CMC alumni office by Nov. 3, 2006. Applicants must be U.S. citizens with at least a bachelor's degree, and must not be more than 29 years of age on Sept. 1 of the year they enter the program. Candidates should not already speak an Asian language, nor have previously studied in an Asian country, but may have backgrounds in virtually any field other than Asian studies, including medicine, the arts, business, law, science, environmental studies, and journalism.

"The program is designed to create an awareness of Asia among as many future leaders as possible, not those who are already familiar with the region," says assistant professor of government Kenneth Miller.

CMC will formally submit candidate nominations to the Henry Luce Foundation during the first week of December. The Foundation will then conduct interviews with the finalists and notify selected scholars in March. Luce Asian Scholars Fellowship winners spend August through July in one of the following East and Southeast countries: Brunei, Cambodia, China and Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, or Vietnam.

Application forms for the fellowship, as well as an overview of the program including frequently asked questions, can be found at: www.hluce.org.
