Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad
at Athenaeum Feb. 22

On Tuesday, Feb. 22, the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum is pleased to welcome Zalmay Khalilzad P'05 P'13 to speak on "U.S. Foreign Policy: The Future of Afghanistan and Its Neighbors." Khalilzad has held multiple ambassador positions including United States Ambassador to the United Nations (2007-2009), United States Ambassador to Afghanistan (2005-2007) and United States Ambassador to Iran (2003-2005). Other experiences include serving as special president envoy to Afghanistan, and special presidential envoy and ambassador at large for Free Iraquis, as well as serving on the National Security Council as the Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Islamic Outreach and Southwest Asia Initiatives and Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Southwest Asia, Near East, and North African Affairs. Khalilzad was the highest-ranking Muslim American in the Administration of U.S. President George W. Bush.
Khalilzad is the co-author of The United States and a Rising China: Strategic and Military Implications (1999) and author of From Containment to Global Leadership: America and the World After the Cold War (1995).
Presently, Khalilzad is the president and CEO of an international advisory firm, Khalilzad Associates LLC. He is also involved with the Center for Strategic International Studies where he serves as a counselor. He sits on the boards of the National Endowment for Democracy, America Abroad Media, and the RAND Corporations Middle East Studies Center. He also sits on the boards of the American University of Iraq in Suleymania and the American University of Afghanistan.
Khalilzad earned both his bachelor's and his master's degrees from the American University of Beruit, Lebanon. Additionally, he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.
As a Pacesetters Fellow, Khalilzad will also be the key note speaker for the Res Publica Luncheon on Feb. 23 in Costa Mesa. The Pacesetters Fellowship Program is the culmination of the hard work and dedication of alumni from the College's first three graduating classes of 1948, 1949, and 1950the Pacesetters. This program attracts distinguished leaders in business, academia, and public affairs to Claremont McKenna College for one-on-one interactions with students. Khalilzad is the twelfth Pacesetters Fellow.
