Women and Leadership

Our Mission

The Women and Leadership Alliance is a joint endeavor to support and promote student programs at the Claremont Colleges that will highlight issues faced by women in leadership in business, government and the professions. Entities currently involved include the Kravis Leadership Institute, the Berger Institute for Work, Family, and Children, the Robert Day School of Economics and Finance, the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum, the Center for Writing and Public Discourse, the Dean of Students Office, the Dean of Faculty Office, the Office of Development, the Center for Global Education, CMS Athletics, Intercollegiate Feminist Center for Teaching, Research and Engagement of the Claremont Colleges, and the CGU School of Educational Studies.

Susan Wood

Wednesday, October 15, 2014: Dr. Susan Wood, who resigned as director of the Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Women’s Health in 2005, when the George W. Bush administration chose to delay indefinitely a decision on whether emergency contraceptives should be sold over the counter. She is now an associate professor of health policy at George Washington University.

Jenn Mattson

Friday, October 24th: Join us for lunch at the Ath with journalist Jenn Mattson, a former radio producer for “The Connection” and an editor for NPR. She spent over six years as a producer for CNN and has been based in Eastern Europe as well as in Asia. She will also conduct an afternoon breakout session with students on “Writing the 800-Word Essay.” Her work has appeared in TheAtlantic.com, USA Today, The Boston Globe, The Women’s Review of Books, and more. Mignon Fogarty

Monday, March 2, 2015: Mignon Fogarty (aka “Grammar Girl”) will speak at the Ath, 6pm. She is also known as “your friendly guide to the world of grammar, punctuation, usage, and fun developments in the English language,” and the founder and managing editor of Quick and Dirty Tips. A magazine writer, technical writer, and entrepreneur, she has served as a senior editor and producer at a number of health and science websites. Mignon believes that learning is fun, and the vast rules of grammar are wonderful fodder for lifelong study.
