Our Mission
The Women and Leadership Alliance is a joint endeavor to support and promote student programs at the Claremont Colleges that will highlight issues faced by women in leadership in business, government and the professions. Entities currently involved include the Kravis Leadership Institute, the Berger Institute for Work, Family, and Children, the Robert Day School of Economics and Finance, the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum, the Center for Writing and Public Discourse, the Dean of Students Office, the Dean of Faculty Office, the Office of Development, the Center for Global Education, CMS Athletics, the Women's Forum, Intercollegiate Women's Studies of the Claremont Colleges, and the CGU School of Educational Studies.

Highlight On Sarah Smith Orr

The Women and Leadership Alliance would like to recognize Sarah Smith Orr, currently serving as executive director of KLI, a co-coordinator of the Women and Leadership Alliance, and teaching courses as a visiting professor. Her expertise lies in leadership — with an emphasis on leadership theory, women leaders, social entrepreneurship, and leadership in the social sector.

3 Networking Tricks of the Trade
The fall season is always full of campus and conference opportunities to meet new people - hopefully people who can help you reach your career goals one day. Here's how you can make the most of every event you attend:
- Be empathetic and sympathetic. Are you listening to the person you're talking to? Do you understand what they care about?
- Ask a lot of questions. Learn everything you can about people - from what they like to eat, to where they went to college, to the name's of their kids and spouses. And remember the answers!
- Go for quality over quantity. Focus on real, meaningful conversations with people rather than just meeting as many people as possible.

November 8, 2012: Ann Meyers Drysdale, the only woman to sign a free agent contract with the NBA. Currently the Vice President of the Phoenix Suns (NBA), Time has called her one of the ten greatest female athletes of all time. This event, in celebration of the 40th anniversary of Title IX, is sponsored by CMS Athletics, the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum, the Berger Institute for Work, Family, and Children, the Kravis Leadership Institute, the Robert Day School of Economics and Finance, and the Center for Human Rights Leadership.
March 1, 2013: 4th Annual WLA Women and Leadership Workshop. Co-sponsored by the Berger Institute for Work, Family, and Children, the Kravis Leadership Institute, and the Robert Day School of Economics and Finance, and members of the Women and Leadership Alliance. This event will take place in the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum. More information to come!

November 9-11, 2012: 2012 Women, Law & Public Policy Seminar, hosted by the Public Leadership Education Network (PLEN). PLEN's Women, Law & Public Policy Seminar explores the ways that the law shapes and interacts with public policy in Washington, D.C. Students who attend make connections with women leaders who work in the policy field, get advice on preparing for law school, and develop the professional skills needed to get a job and launch policy careers post-graduation. Outstanding college women interested in exploring careers in public policy and the law can apply for scholarships to attend. Application deadline for scholarships: September 28th. Registration deadline: October 5th.
