The Board of Advisors of the Robert Day School of Economics and Finance supports the School by providing guidance and direction on important strategic initiatives of the School, by fostering close ties between the School and the corporate, entrepreneurial and public sector communities, and by sponsoring and facilitating internships and jobs placements for students.

Peter Barker was elected Chair of the CMC Board of Trustees in 2002, and has held several key leadership positions, including Chair of the Strategic Planning Steering Committee and Board Affairs Committee, and membership on the Executive and Investment committees.

A leader in the corporate and philanthropic arenas, Mr. Barker is the Retired Chairman of California for JPMorgan Chase & Co.  He is an experienced banker and business leader who is also a retired partner of Goldman, Sachs & Co., and serves on the boards of Avery International, Fluor Corporation and The Automobile Company of Southern California. 

His volunteer activities and interests include serving as a Director of the W. M. Keck Foundation; Trustee, the Huntington Library; past Chair, the Los Angeles Area Boy Scouts Council of America;  past Governor, Music Center of Los Angeles County; President of the Fletcher Jones Foundation; Overseer, the Keck School of Medicine at USC; and was a member of the Los Angeles Mayor's Task Force on Finance and the California State Senate Commission on Corporate Finance Governance.

James B. McElwee, CPA has been a General Partner of Weston Presidio Capital, a private equity firm since November 1992. He is a Partner of Weston Presidio, Weston Presidio Capital III, L.P.; Weston Presidio Capital IV, L.P. and Weston Presidio Capital V, L.P. Mr. McElwee has been active in the venture capital industry since 1979.

From July 1979 to November 1992, he served as Senior Vice President and Managing Director of the Security Pacific Venture Capital Group, a private equity firm and was the founding Managing Director of its Menlo Park, California office. He also served as Senior Vice President of Security Pacific Capital Corp, as Senior Vice President at Bank of America Capital Corporation, and as Senior Consultant with Accenture, an international consulting firm and Andersen Consulting, where he advised a variety of clients in the healthcare, retailing, and technology industries. He also served as a Director of BlueArc Corporation, Cucina! Cucina! Italian Cafe, Inc. and MediaQ, Inc. He served as a Director of Wild Oats Markets Inc., from July 1993 to December 31, 2003 and DTS Inc., from October 1997 to December 31, 2007.

Mr. McElwee has been a Director of Digital Theater Systems Inc. since October 1997. He serves as a Director of Curtco Robb Media, NextMedia Group, Flying Bear Media, Innovation Technology Group (Vitria), Purcell Systems Incorporated, Micro Power Electronics, Inc., and Silego Technology, Inc. Mr. McElwee is responsible for Weston Presidio's investments in Cucina Cucinal, Digital Theater Systems, IC Works, MediaQ, RedEnvelope, Sassaby, Sweet Factory, Vitria Technology, and XyberNET. He serves on the Wharton Entrepreneurial Advisory Board of Wharton Graduate School of Business.

Mr. McElwee holds a B.A. from Claremont McKenna College and an MBA from The Wharton Graduate School of Business.

 

Gary Birkenbeuel '80

He has been a partner at Ernst & Young since 1992. His nearly three decades of experience in public accounting have allowed him to serve multinational, publicly- and privately-held companies engaged in aerospace and defense, entertainment, technology, and media industries. His extensive knowledge of mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, and accounting and auditing issues have benefited a list of current and former clients including Teledyne Technologies, Lions Gate Entertainment, TicketMaster, Earthlink, USA Studios, Petersen Publishing, PropertyFirst.com, Film Roman, Iwerks Entertainment, and The Los Angeles Dodgers.

Mr. Birkenbeuel has served as Pacific South West Area Industry Leader for Technology, Communications and Entertainment (1997-2002), and from 2002-2008, as Pacific South West Area AABS Managing Partner. He serves on the boards for Junior Achievement, the Los Angeles Sports Council, and the American Film Institute, and has been licensed to practice accounting in California since 1984. He also is a member of AICPA and California Society of CPAs.

Gary Birkenbeuel graduated from Claremont McKenna College in 1980 with a B.A. in economics.

Heidi Nelson Cruz ’94

Cruz, who graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a B.A. in economics and international relations from CMC in 1994, is a managing director in the Private Wealth Management Group at Goldman Sachs, Texas. She and her two partners work with clients to implement high net worth portfolios across a range of investments and asset classes, including complex derivatives products, private equity, hedge funds, single stock risk management, U.S. and international equities, and fixed income.

Ms. Cruz began her career as an investment banker with JPMorgan in New York, focusing on international structured finance and subsequently on Latin America mergers and acquisitions.

In 2000, she served on the Bush 2000 Campaign in Austin as one of President George W. Bush's three economic advisors. She also served in the Administration as the economic director for the Western Hemisphere at the National Security Council at the White House, advising the President and then-National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice. She also is a former director at the U.S. Treasury Department and was special policy assistant to Ambassador Robert B. Zoellick, then Chief U.S. international trade negotiator.

In addition to her private-sector work, Heidi served on the Board of Directors of Living Water International, dedicated to providing clean water and sanitation equipment in the developing world. Her publications include the book chapter, "Expanding Opportunity Through Free Trade," in Thank You, President Bush; a chapter in Exchange Rate Policies for Emerging Market Economies; and a Harvard Case Study: "American International Group." She also is a Term Member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

After graduating from CMC, Ms. Cruz received an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School, and a master's of European Business from Universite Libre de Bruxelles in Brussels, Belgium.

Alan Delsman ’68

Alan Delsman graduated from Claremont McKenna College with a B.A. in International Relations in 1968 and from the University of Washington with a M.A. in Political Science in 1970.

In 2001 Mr. Delsman joined Deutsche Bank, where he is the Head of Credit Risk Management for the Americas responsible for corporations within the Investment Bank. He also is the Deputy Head for this responsibility globally. His first role at Deutsche was as Chief Credit Officer for Latin America.

Prior to joining Deutsche Bank, Mr. Delsman worked for The Chase Manhattan Bank, where he held a variety of positions that included assignments in Tehran, London, Panama, Miami and New York.

Joining Carlyle Global Financial Services Partners on November 1, 2008, Christopher Dodds is an Operating Executive and Senior Advisor. He is based in San Francisco.
Previously, Mr. Dodds served as the Chief Financial Officer from 1999 to May 18, 2007, Executive Vice President from 1998 to May 18, 2007, Corporate Controller from November 1997 to March 1999, Corporate Treasurer from 1993 to 1997, and Principal Accounting Officer at The Charles Schwab Corporation where he was involved in strategic planning, financial planning and analysis, treasury, taxation, corporate accounting, external and regulatory reporting, mergers and acquisitions, investor relations, risk management and corporate real estate.

He served as Chief Financial Officer since 1999, Executive Vice President since 1998, and Vice President of Corporate Finance and Mergers and Acquisitions from 1989 to 1993 at Charles Schwab & Co. Inc. Mr. Dodds joined the firm in 1986 and had held a variety of financial positions in treasury, financial planning and analysis, and corporate development. Prior to that, he served in the treasury departments of Gulf Oil and Exxon.
Prior to joining Carlyle in November 2008, Mr. Dodds was Senior Advisor to TPG from November 2007 through October 2008.

Mr. Dodds serves as a Director of The TCW Group, Inc., Charles Schwab Bank, BAMCO Inc., and Baron Capital Management, Inc. He serves as a Director of U.S. Trust NY. Mr. Dodds has been a Director of Investment Technology Group Inc. since June 2008. He served as a Director of USTC and Cost Plus Inc. since June 23, 2006.

Mr. Dodds earned his M.B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh and his bachelor’s degree from Clemson University, where he was captain of the men’s varsity basketball team.

 

 

Russell Greenberg ’79

Russell J. Greenberg co-founded Altus Capital Partners in 2003 to continue the successful investment strategy of his previous fund, Max Capital Partners. He serves as Managing Partner, utilizing his 25 plus years of experience in private equity and buyout investing with more than 100 buyouts corporate finance and merger transactions with an aggregate value of more than $6 billion.

Before forming the Altus Capital and Max Capital funds, Russ held executive positions at investment banks including Brean Murray Securities Inc.; Daiwa Securities America Inc.; and Prudential-Bache Capital Securities. As Managing Partner at Altus Capital Partners, he serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Thomson Plastics, Inc. and Aqua-Chem, Inc., and serves on the board of International Imaging Materials, Inc. Thermafiber, Inc. and Gulfco Holding Corp.

Russ is a graduate of Claremont McKenna College with an honors degree in Economics and holds an MBA from The Amos Tuck School at Dartmouth College.

Mr. Harris is a managing director in the Newport Beach office and a member of PIMCO (Pacific Investment Management Company)'s executive committee. Mr. Harris serves as chairman and president of PIMCO Funds. He also develops and oversees strategic market initiatives at the firm and serves as a senior member of the firm's Business Assessment Committee. Mr. Harris joined PIMCO in 1985. He has 30 years of investment experience.

Mr. Harris holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Claremont McKenna College.

Prior to working at Damitz, Brooks, Nightingale, Turner and Morrisset, Mr. Harris worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers from 2007 to 2012 as a Senior Audit Manager. Previously, Mr. Harris has also worked at Murrell, Hall, McIntosh & Co. PLLP from July 2005 to July 2007 as a Senior Audit Manager, specializing in audits of smaller public companies and providing accounting consulting services to publically traded non-audit clients.

Andrew J. Kaiser P'13

Andrew Kaiser is chief operating officer of Goldman Sachs Bank USA.  Mr. Kaiser is responsible for strategy, business development, private banking, operations and technology.  Previously, he was responsible for building and running Private Banking within Private Wealth Management.

Mr. Kaiser joined the firm in Mortgage Finance in Fixed Income in 1986.  From 1987 to 1996, he was a member of the Financial Institutions Group in the Investment Banking Division (IBD) and was based in both Los Angeles and New York.  From 1997 to 2005, Mr. Kaiser was head of the Risk Markets Group, a joint venture of IBD and FICC, responsible for corporate risk securitization and risk management.  He was named managing director in 1997 and partner in 2006.

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Kaiser was an associate at Merrill Lynch and an analyst at Becker Paribas.  He is a member of the Board of Directors of NatureServe, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing the scientific basis for effective environmental conservation action.  He is also a former co-chairman of the Risk-Linked Securities Sub-Committee of the Bond Market Association.

Mr. Kaiser received a BA from Stanford University in 1983.

Ms. Mann is part of an eight person team whose clients consist of private company owners, Fortune 500 executives, families with substantial wealth, foundations, and endowments. Ms. Mann’s team leverages the firm’s resources to enhance clients’ ability to grow and protect assets by providing asset allocation and investment implementation, access to external investment managers and trust and estate advisory capabilities.

Ms. Mann joined Goldman Sachs in 2000 From Banc of America Securities where she worked in fixed income. She received her Masters in Business Administration from the University of Chicago. Prior to attending business school, Ms. Mann worked as a sales consultant for Paychex Inc. and was a CPA with a focus on taxation with both Deloitte and Touche and Atlantic Richfield Corp. Ms. Mann graduated from Claremont McKenna College with a BA in Economics and Accounting. She lives in Chatham, New Jersey with her husband Ray and two sons.

Joseph Massoud is the Managing Partner of Anholt Services (USA), Inc. after joining the company at its inception in 2013. He was previously the CEO of Compass Diversified Holdings (NYSE: CODI) and the Managing Partner of Compass Group Management LLC, the primary investment advisor for the Kattegat Trust, from 1998 to 2012. Mr. Massoud was also a member of CODI’s board of directors. Previously, Mr. Massoud was with a retail heating oil distributor, Petroleum Heat and Power, Inc.; an investment advisor, Colony Capital, Inc.; and a global consulting firm, McKinsey & Co.

Mr. Massoud has served as a board member of Teekay LNG Partners (NYSE: TGP) and is currently a board member of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Southwestern Connecticut and Families Network of Western Connecticut. Mr. Massoud is responsible for the day to day management of Anholt Services (USA), Inc.

Ms. Therese A. Mrozek, J.D. is a Partner, the Chief Operating Officer, and the Chief Compliance Officer at Weston Presidio. She joined the firm in January 2001. Ms. Mrozek is primarily responsible for managing the execution of the firm’s strategic objectives and daily administrative functions. She manages the due diligence and legal processes with respect to the Firm investments and liquidity events.

Previously, Ms. Mrozek served as a Senior Partner at Brobeck, Phleger and Harrison LLP where she was a Managing Partner of the firm’s Palo Alto office. Also, she was a Partner at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe. In addition to working with numerous emerging companies throughout Silicon Valley, she acted as a primary outside counsel for Cisco Systems and was responsible for managing their mergers and acquisitions process.

Previously, she served on the Board of Directors of Hanna Andersson and Apple American group. She served as Director of SquareTrade. Ms. Mrozek has been named as one of the leading lawyers in Silicon Valley by San Jose Magazine and listed by Chambers and Partners among the world’s leading lawyers.

Additionally, Ms. Mrozek currently serves on the Board of Directors of Purcell Systems. In addition, she is also a board observer for Robbins Bros.

John R. Shrewsberry '87

John R. Shrewsberry is an Executive Vice President and Group Head of Wells Fargo’s Securities and Investment Group, which includes the institutional fixed income, equity and derivatives sales and trading activities of the firm, public finance, investment research, and a credit intensive principal investment portfolio of more than billion of assets. The business has offices in the U.S. in addition to Europe and Asia. Mr. Shrewsberry is based in San Francisco, and is a member of the firm’s Management Committee.

With more than 20 years of experience in banking and investing, he assumed his current role in 2006. From 2001 through 2005, he was the Group Head of Wells Fargo Commercial Capital, the successor to a commercial finance company he co-founded that became part of Wells Fargo in 2001. Previously Mr. Shrewsberry worked at Goldman Sachs and Credit Suisse First Boston in the principal finance areas.

He earned his B.A. in economics from Claremont McKenna College and an M.B.A. from the Yale School of Management. With a strong commitment to the community, Mr. Shrewsberry serves on the boards of The Robert Day School of Economics and Finance, the American Bankers Association Securities Association and the San Francisco Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Born in Connecticut, he and his family live in Piedmont, California. .

 

Robert Thomas ’99

Mr. Robert Thomas serves as the Chief Investment Officer for the George Kaiser Family Foundation. Mr. Thomas is responsible for the financial administration and management of its $4 billion investment portfolio. For the previous 10 years, he served as a Portfolio Manager for the Bill Gates Investment Office, otherwise known as Cascade Investment, which invests the personal assets of Mr. Gates as well as the assets of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In his capacity working for Bill Gates Investment, he held several different Portfolio Manager positions, with the most recent responsibility being oversight of all externally managed fund relationships (public and private). Previous areas of responsibility have included energy/commodities, fixed income, currencies and general public and private equity analysis.

He serves as a Director at Memjet, Ltd. and is a Member of the Oklahoma State Treasurers Investment Advisory Council.

Mr. Thomas earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics from Claremont McKenna College, Magna Cum Laude and is a CFA Charterholder.

Mr. Wang is the Head of Samena Asia Managers. Prior to joining Samena Capital, he was a Managing Director with Vision Investment Management in charge of the firm’s Hedge Fund Seeding Group. He has 18 years of experience in the investment management industry. Prior to Vision, Mr. Wang started and ran the Asian investment operations for a US based multi-strategy fund, and before that, managed a multi-billion, multi-strategy portfolio of hedge funds for a prominent family office in Hong Kong. Mr. Wang has 7 years of private equity experience investing and operating companies throughout Greater China. He has been a Managing Director of three companies encompassing consumer and industrial products where he led restructurings. Mr. Wang began his career with IBM and later joined the Boston Consulting Group. He graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a Bachelor's degree in Economics and received his MBA from the Harvard Business School.
