The Pantheon, commissioned by Marcus Agrippa (27 BCE) and built in its final form by Hadrian (126 CE)

The Pantheon, a Roman temple built to all the gods, has a long and varied history in the “eternal city.” Originally built by Marcus Agrippa in 27 BCE, the temple was subsequently burned by fires and rebuilt by Domitian only to bur again in the fires in 110 CE, and was built in its final form by Hadrian around 126 CE. The temple is an architectural masterpiece, and stands as the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world. During the medieval period the temple was consecrated as a Christian church, the Sancta Maria ad Martyres, and it was later used as a tomb for such luminaries as Raphael and Caracci. Today you will find the Pantheon full of Christian iconography, though within a thoroughly Roman architectural format that speaks to the long cultural history of this infamous city.
