What began as an ASCMC-sponsored club has now become the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, serving the 5C community. Last spring, CMC student entrepreneurs, both commercially focused and social-mission focused, approached KLI, the Robert Day School and the Dean of the Faculty to explore the possibility of formalizing a program for innovation and entrepreneurship. Under the direction of Von Tobel Professor of Economics Janet Kiholm Smith, entrepreneurial-minded students are now able to plug into a broader menu of resources, and even have their own dedicated space on campus.
In late September 2012, the CIE held its first official event as a new institute on campus. The event included an Athenaeum luncheon with guest speaker and CMC alum Wayne Slavitt ’80, followed by a panel discussion with Mr. Slavitt, Molly Schmid, Ph.D, Andy Horowitz P’03, Matthew Goldman ’04, and Austin Kiessig ’06, moderated by KLI’s own Jay Conger. The day concluded with an open house at the CIE building, wrapping up an eventful day of entrepreneurship.
